Boxing day 2003

'Twas eleven of the clock, the day after Christmas in the Wirral village of Willaston. The residents had gathered as they had done in years gone by despite the dark threatening clouds. Then hark! The strains of street music drifted through the village streets to reward their stalwart hearts.

'Twas the morris once more on their festive pilgrimage to the village green.

This year there was great anticipation for the ladies of Mockbeggar would, at last, be performing the dance of Willaston Green upon its home ground for the 1st time in over 100 years.

The dancing was led by the Mersey Morris men with Cotswold Dances of Vandals, Balance the Straw and others. Then after the serving of mulled wine and cake on the sword to the gathered throng. A great cheer went up as the ladies of Mockbeggar processed on to the dancing ground.

Led in by dulcet voices, the ladies broke into the dance with gusto. Silence fell upon the gathered crowd in wonder at the great spectacle recreated before them.

Rapturous applause greeting the valiant dancers at the end of their flawless performance as the villages welcome the dance home after its long absence.

Mockbeggar finished their spot with another Cheshire Dance from the seaside town of Runcorn.

The Beelzebob players finished off the day with a traditional mummers play and Molly Dance.
